South High Magnet School, the Omaha Public School district’s arts magnet, in collaboration with SNAP! Productions, will present the Midwest premiere of In The Heights, the Tony award-winning musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Set inthe largely Dominican-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City, In The Heights was nominated in 2008 for thirteen Tony awards, winning four: Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestration. It won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, and was nominated for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The story takes place over three days and focuses on the lives of Usnavi, owner of a tiny bodega, Nina Rosario and her parents, who own a taxi dispatch, Vanessa, who runs the hair salon across the street, and Abuela Claudia, theneighborhood matriarch.
SNAP! Productions began operations in 1993 and this year was recognized by Playbill as one of 15 regional theaters nationwide leading the way for diversity and tolerance.
This collaborative production will benefit the proposed new visual and performing arts addition planned at South, as well as facility improvements for SNAP! Productions.
Featuring a large cast of all ages, South has cast the younger roles with students from the performing arts program at the school, while SNAP! has cast the adult roles from members of the local theatre community.
SNAP’s artistic director, Michal Simpson, is directing the production, with South High Magnet Choral Director Tyler Gruttemeyer as music director. Production dates are June 29, 30, July 1 and 2, 2017. For more information, please contact Rebecca Noble at 531.299.7685.
